Homeowner General Maintenance Checklist

If you’re a new or veteran homeowner, having an organized list of popular and recommended maintenance options over the course of the year can provide you with a simple way for keeping your abode up to snuff! Whether you choose a couple or all of the points listed, it is meant to provide a framework for what things you might want to look at that often slip our minds, or perhaps your process already covers these points, in that case bravo!

General Monthly Quick Tasks

  1. Test smoke & CO detectors

  2. Replace HVAC filters (or every 3 months depending on type)

  3. Check under sinks, around plumbing, and around appliances for leaks or signs of mold

  4. Clean range hood filters

  5. Run a cup of vinegar through dishwasher and washing machine

  6. Test garage door safety sensors

  7. Wipe down baseboards, vents, and ceiling fans

  8. Inspect grout and caulking in bathrooms and kitchen

  9. Verify outdoor lighting and motion sensor lights work

  10. Walk the property to check for signs of pests or damage

Springtime is not only a popular time for new properties to hit the market, but it is also a great opportunity to make sure you’re doing the right things to keep your home well-kept. Whether you choose a couple or all of the points listed, it is meant to provide a framework for what things you might want to look at that often slip our minds, or perhaps your process already covers these points, in that case bravo!

Spring

  1. Inspect the roof gutters, and downspouts for winter damage

  2. Schedule HVAC service (AC tune-up)

  3. Check windows, screens, and doors for damage or drafts (replace weatherstripping as needed)

  4. Power wash siding, driveways, walkways, and decks

  5. Treat lawn and landscaping for pests and fertilize

  6. Trim back trees and shrubs near the house

  7. Inspect and clean outdoor furniture and grill

  8. Check basement/crawlspace for moisture or mold

  9. Flush hot water heater to remove sediment

  10. Inspect foundation for cracks or signs of settling
