Homeowner Winter Maintenance Checklist

Homeowner Winter Maintenance Checklist

The snow finally reminds us that we are in fact Canadian and we must brave the weather every time we step out of our homes in the early morning or late nights. Wintertime however is a time where homeowners can be left unprepared and maybe even unsure about what should be done in and around the home during the winter months, which is why I have constructed a list to help you through winter maintenance! Whether you choose a couple or all of the points listed, it is meant to provide a framework for what things you might want to look at that often slip our minds, or perhaps your process already covers these points, in that case bravo!

Winter

  1. Inspect for ice dams or water damage and clear snow from roof edges

  2. Reverse ceiling fan direction (clockwise for warm air circulation)

  3. Keep vents and radiators unobstructed

  4. Monitor indoor humidity to prevent condensation and mold

  5. Test GFCI outlets and electrical panels for proper function

  6. Inspect pipes in unheated areas (wrap with insulation if needed)

  7. Check insulation in the attic and basement to minimize heat loss

  8. Test and service backup battery (if applicable)

  9. Seal drafts with caulk or foam insulation

  10. Regularly shovel walkways and apply salt or sand to prevent ice

  11. Check for pest entry points

  12. Check your home’s emergency supplies

These are but a couple of some valuable tidbits that can help you keep your home in check during the colder months, but if you have any other important tips or have questions regarding some of these tasks feel free to let me know!
